About

Mark Burn, Chartered Engineer.

Chartered European Engineer with 25 years in industrial automation and control systems. I started on the production line and worked up to leading engineering departments, so I care as much about the people and processes behind a system as the system itself.

What that means for you

Shop floor to boardroom.

You get someone who has stood on the shop floor at three in the morning with a stopped line, and who has presented a multi-million pound business case to a board. I understand what matters to operators, engineers, managers and directors, and can translate between them.

Why Tyne Automation

Senior judgement, no overhead.

Having worked on both the client and the vendor side, I know how projects go wrong and what it takes to put them right. I set up Tyne Automation to offer that experience without the overhead of a full-time hire. Everything I do is guided by one principle: making sure the job is done right.

Career

Twenty-five years, shop floor to leadership.

Where it started

Nissan Motor Manufacturing, Sunderland

A five-year advanced apprenticeship in electrical-mechanical engineering. Diagnosing faults and modifying PLCs on production equipment, I learned how people, processes and technology keep a plant running.

Site and project engineering

ATS Global and Technip Umbilical Systems

Industrial IT, machine tools and PLC control systems on site at clients including Rolls-Royce, with short assignments in Houston.

New model projects

Nissan Motor Manufacturing

Upgrading high-volume automotive production for new vehicle models, from specification to commissioning, while production kept running.

Maintenance, automation and energy

Formica

A site-wide SCADA system covering 16 assets and 500+ process variables, then press and boiler heat control that cut natural gas use by 50%. I also developed a £5.9M solar PV business case.

Engineering leadership

HAHN Automation Group

Led a 17-strong team delivering high-value OEM machinery, owning project lifecycles, functional safety and UKCA/CE compliance. Introduced AI vision for robot pick and place and part inspection.

Senior engineering leadership

Primula Ltd

Senior Engineering & Project Manager, leading the engineering function, managing projects, overseeing maintenance and coordinating external contractors.

Today

Tyne Automation

Offering that experience as a consultant, interim leader or fractional technical authority, and keeping hands-on skills current by building and running mlat.uk.

How I work

Four commitments.

Plain speaking

I tell you what I find, backed by evidence, even when it is not what you hoped to hear.

Safety and compliance first

They are design requirements, not afterthoughts.

Standards that last

I leave behind documentation, processes and capable people.

Accountability

If I take it on, I own the outcome.
